Deaths are reported to the coroner if the death was violent or unnatural, sudden and unexplained, happened within 14 days of being seen by a doctor, or if it occurred during an operation, or the deceased was in police or prison custody.
Sometimes an inquest is held but an inquest must be held where the death happened in police or prison custody.
In some cases a jury is enpanelled to assist the Judge who presides over the inquest. The main purpose of an inquest is to determine where, how or why the person died. Sometimes a Jury is enpanelled to assist the court.
