Merry Christmas Driving

Tis the Season to be cheerful, but things can turn very sour if you are caught drink driving! It doesnt take long for a Santa moment to turn into a Scrooge moment! Fire water clouds judgement and with every single police force in the country, running anti-drink drive campaigns, it is almost inevitable that a lapse of judgement which involves alcohol and motor cars, will result in a night locked up in a poor alternative to Santa’s Grotto! The pain does not end there, as all drink-drive offences result in an automatic ban of at least a year. High readings or repeat offenders could even end in custodial sentences. Drunk-in-charge offences will also result in disqualification. Police forces are now working overtime to dispense the urban myth that drink driving is a night time issue. It is therefore very important to extend caution to driving after having had a drinking session the night before. It is just as likely that you will meet a police check-point between 6 and 11 in the morning, as between 6 and 11 at night. There is an equal chance of being stopped between 2 and 5 in the morning and between 2 and 5 in the evening! To put the matter in more official language “anti-drink drive campaigns are now in full swing with officers working at all times of day and night to make our roads safer”.

All motorists who are stopped this year as part of the seasonal campaign also run the risk of being tested for drug impairment. Investigations which lead to suspicion of drugs offences may result in unpleasant searches of peoples homes and property and even bodily searches. Officers are using the latest technology to detect instances of impaired driving. Motorbikes, scooters, lorries, buses and vans will come under the radar, as well as cars.

The carrying of passengers, or children, or driving in built up areas or at excessive speeds will all be considered to be aggravating features. It is anticipated that the “ocassional courts” will be again busy this year, as an official police source has stated that “despite all the warnings, drink and drug driving continues to be a significant problem causing harm within our communities”.
