A top Fringe comedian is being sued by her ex-husband for incorporating humorous material about their split into her routine. Unfortunately – unlike her audiences – her ex does not see the funny side of the break-up, perhaps because he is the butt of the jokes! The unwilling stooge is not buying the joker’s riposte that ‘the main gist of the references was to tell the audience about how sad I am that my marriage has broken down recently’. For him this is not a laughing matter, and in fact he sees it as defamatory and a breach of privacy.
Somewhat ironically, the show follows a recent show about freedom of speech which was performed in London by the comedian. Coincidentally, London has been called ‘the divorce capital of the world’ because of the mammoth awards in so-called ‘Big Money’ cases. The comedian’s ex is suing her for £30,000 and costs, which she says could bankrupt her.
Apparently joking about personal relationship break downs is a topic that has previously featured , in the funny woman’s repertoire. Of course that didn’t stop her most recent ex from ‘popping the question’! As Hamlet might say when soliloquising about the issue, ‘To laugh or not to laugh – that is the question!’
